This autumn, come and share our passion for literature as the impulse for your own creative writing.
Our forthcoming series of residential courses offer a stimulating, engaging and enjoyable introduction to, and exploration of, great gothic writing to spark the imagination.
Each day our experienced tutors offer a choice of literature-based workshops alongside writing skills sessions and individual tutorial support.
And, of course, there will be free time to write and savour your surroundings.
Typically, your THOUGHTTREE course will follow this structure:
Arrival and welcome, from 4pm
Time to meet your tutors and fellow writers, followed by a choice of tutor-led taster workshops to whet the (literary) appetite, followed by dinner.
To set the scene, after dinner we invite you on a moonlit walk within the grounds for visualisation - an opportunity for us to establish the mood and for you to soak up the atmosphere. Sleep well..!
After breakfast, a choice of small-group workshops are on offer. You can join us in a celebration of the richness of gothic writing across time, when we explore key characteristics of the genre which you may wish to exploit in your own writing; and we will lead you in a variety of approaches to using some of those techniques in your own poetry, prose or scriptwriting.
Linger over a light lunch, followed by an afternoon of free writing time and individual mentoring from your tutor, if you choose.
In the evening, dinner will be followed by fireside readings of classic gothic tales, for those who wish to join us (think of Mary Shelley, Polidori and Lord Byron, telling each other stories late into the night in their villa by Lake Geneva, dreaming up characters such as Dr Frankenstein’s ‘monster’ and the definitive Vampyre….) Why not take the opportunity to read out some of your own writing..?
Breakfast will be followed by free writing time (tutors available). The course will come to a close with a tutor-led group workshopping session – another chance to share your writing with your peers in the spirit of supportive collaboration – followed by lunch and farewell.
